Web 2.0 Tools and Definitions
AJAX - Ajax (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML) is a web development technique used for creating interactive web applications. The intent is to make web pages feel more responsive by exchanging small amount of data with the server behind the scenes, so that the entire web page does not have to be reloaded each time the user requests a change.
Blog - A blog is a website where entries are written in chronological order and commonly displayed in reverse chronological order.
Chat - Chat is a form of real-time Internet chat or synchronous conferencing. It is mainly designed for group (many-to-many) communication in discussion forums called channels, but also allows one-to-one communication and data transfers via private message.
Contact Module - This module is intended for displaying your contact information in different places besides just a contact page.
Events - Events can be categorized and calendar views can be customized to show all or some of these categories.
Filtering - Attempt to present to the user information items (movies, music, books, news, web pages) the user is interested in.
Forum - An Internet forum is a web application for holding discussions and posting user generated content.
Gallery - Allows users to easily and quickly add slideshows or images to your content items.
Guestbook - A guestbook is a logging system that allows visitors of a website to leave a public comment. Traditionally, the term applied to the actual ledgers held, for that same purpose, at B&Bs and museums.
Help Desk - Provision of services or product based support to external clients: As a internal case management system supporting internal departments for products or services.
Mailing List - A mailing list is a collection of names and addresses used by an individual or an organization to send material to multiple recipients.
Newsletter - A newsletter is a regularly distributed publication generally about one main topic that is of interest to its subscribers.
Pod cast - A podcast is a digital media file, or a series of such files, that is distributed over the Internet using syndication feeds for playback on portable media players and personal computers.
Polls - Allows your users to vote for a particular poll from anywhere on your site.
Portfolios - Portfolios are used to plan, organize and document education, work samples and skills. People use portfolios to apply to college or training programs, get a job, get a higher salary, show transferable skills, and to track personal development.
Private Messages Systems (PMS) - It will allow members to send messages between each other, reply, and delete old messages.
ROR - Resources of a Resource (ROR) is an XML format for describing the content of an internet resource or website in a generic fashion so this content can be better understood by search engines, spiders, web applications, etc.
RSS - RSS is a family of Web feed formats used to publish frequently updated content such as blog entries, news headlines or podcasts.
Shoutbox - A shoutbox, saybox, tagboard, or chatterbox is a chat-like feature of some websites that allows people to quickly leave messages on the website, generally without any form of user registration.
Site Map - A site map (or sitemap) is a graphical representation of the architecture of a web site.
Skype - Skype allows users to make voice calls from their computer to other Skype users free of charge, or to landlines and cell phones for a fee.
Social Book marking - Social bookmarking is a way for Internet users to store, organize, share and search bookmarks of web pages. In a social bookmarking system, users save links to web pages that they want to remember and/or share.
Social Search - A social search engine is a type of search engine that determines the relevance of search results by considering the interactions or contributions of users.
Sports & Games - It allows athletes (or anyone else) to log their efforts and analyze their performance. It is great for keeping track of workouts and how you are progressing.
SSE - Simple Sharing Extensions are extensions to RSS and Atom feed formats designed to enable the aggregation of information by using a variety of data sources.
Streaming media - Streaming media is multimedia that is continuously received by, and normally displayed to the end-user while it is being delivered by the provider.
VOIP - Voice over Internet Protocol, also called VoIP, IP Telephony, Internet telephony, Broadband telephony, Broadband Phone and Voice over Broadband is the routing of voice conversations over the Internet or through any other IP-based network.
